Earth observation data policy has received little attention, even though the conditions of access to Earth observation data are fundamental to the exploitation of and the further growth of the Earth observation sector. This unique book addresses this limitation. Earth Observation Data Policy and Europe (EOPOLE) sponsored by the European Commission’s Framework IV programme. The primary objectives of this book are identical with those of the EOPOLE project, namely: to review, coordinate and disseminate relevant European national research in Earth observation data policy with a strong users perspective; and to identify and recommend improvements to Earth observation data policy with a distinctly European perspective in order to provide better conditions for the expansion of the Earth observation sector. The book is structured into five parts that explore the main issues in Earth observation data policy and Europe: legal dimensions; market issues; technology; pricing policy; and archiving issues. The book concludes with recommendations on the ways forward for Earth observation data policy and Europe.
